Finished Visio.M electric concept car revealed to public

The Visio.M on the test track, earlier this year

Three years ago, we first heard about the Mute electric concept car. Created via a collaboration between 20 departments at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), it was designed chiefly to be efficient, inexpensive and safe. A project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research followed, in which a consortium of over a dozen companies (including TUM, Daimler and BMW) set about designing a Mute-based city car known as the Visio.M. That two-seater car is now complete, and is being revealed to the public for the first time this week. .. Continue Reading Finished Visio.M electric concept car revealed to public

Alpine Hawk keeps alarm-equipped "eyes" on skis and snowboards

AlpineTec is raising money to pursue completion of the AlpineHawk

It's a dilemma that most every skier or snowboarder has faced: leave your ride unattended outside the lodge and risk walking out to an empty space where it used to be, skip lunch/après ski drinks, or obsessively look out the window to make sure you don't become a theft victim. You could use one of those compact cable locks, but that's one extra thing in your pocket and a thin cable isn't all that secure, anyway. The AlpineHawk, the first product from Norwegian company AlpineTec, provides a fourth option: an electronic anti-theft system that sounds an alarm and sends you a smartphone alert if someone tries to make off with your equipment. .. Researchers at Tohoku University in Japan have developed a new low-cost flat panel light source that could pioneer a new generation of brighter, cheaper and greener lighting devices to rival LEDs. The device uses arrays of highly conductive carbon nanotubes to deliver evenly-distributed illumination with high efficiency and a power consumption as low as 0.1 Watts – about 100 times lower than that of light-emitting diodes. .. One of the many challenges facing engine designers is the need to increase power output while simultaneously retaining or improving efficiency. Although a four-cylinder engine is still an engineering marvel, there remain many friction points that reduce energy output. Namikoshi Electronics of Japan believes its unorthodox 4-in-1 concept engine could provide an alternative powerplant to the automobile industry. .. What "Star Wars" laser bolts would actually look like

It's no secret that Star Wars is full of scenes that defy the laws of physics. From space battles inspired by WW I and II dogfights to beams of light clashing in lightsaber duels. The laser bolts fired from Han Solo's trusty blaster and Luke's X-wing also play by their own rules, traveling much slower than the speed of light and being perfectly visible in the vacuum of space. Researchers in Poland have now created a film to show what a laser bolt would actually look like... Continue Reading What "Star Wars" laser bolts would actually look like

Keanu Reeves' Arch Motorcycle Company presents its first bike: The KRGT-1

Arch Motorcycle Company's KRGT-1 - available in bare billet or black

You hear plenty of stories about what a stand-up guy Keanu Reeves is when the cameras aren't rolling – and now it makes sense. Turns out he's a madly passionate motorcyclist, which in my books makes him a superior human being. Reeves isn't short of a dollar, so together with chopper whiz Gard Hollinger he's built the bike of his dreams, and started a company manufacturing them. Arch Motorcycle Company has just released its first bike, the KRGT-1, a US$78,000 chopper-inspired sports naked with a giant 2-litre S&S v-twin engine and a body that's basically all hewn from billet aluminum. No word on whether it explodes if you go less than 50 miles an hour, best keep the throttle open just to be safe... Good night, Chicago

Good night, Chicago

I like Chicago. The city is clean, the architecture is nice, Wrigley Field is fun, a river cuts through it and the lake is right there. I wanted to make fun of the Bean but it drew me in like a mosquito about to be zapped. And hey, I realized that I don't really like ketchup when I visited Chicago. It's a nice place.

Researchers at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore have developed a new, proof-of-concept anode for lithium-ion batteries that can charge to 70 percent of its capacity in only two minutes and has a very long lifespan of ten thousands charge/discharge cycles.
