Home field advantage: French automakers awe in Paris

French automakers in Paris (Photo: C.C. Weiss/Gizmag)

With introductions like the Renault EOLAB and Citroën C4 Cactus Airflow in the days leading up to the 2014 Paris Motor Show, it became obvious that the French had big plans for their home show. French automakers, big and small, didn't disappoint, showing a multitude of highly stylized, tech-heavy concepts and vehicles during the show. They had such a strong showing, in fact, that we thought it appropriate to give them a dedicated space separate from our main Paris wrap-up. Here's what the French have to say about modern vehicle design. .. Continue Reading Home field advantage: French automakers awe in Paris

The United States Air Force (USAF) has announced that it is in the process of fitting out its fleet of F-16 fighters with a NASA-developed system that has the potential to save hundreds of lives and billions of dollars by preventing aircraft crashes due to pilot error. A Little Thunder rocks beyond your guitar's bottom end

A Little Thunder from Andy Alt

For the last few years, guitarist Andy Alt has been chipping away at a new kind of electric guitar pickup that allows a player to add a separate low end signal to the two lowest strings. A Little Thunder has been designed as a humbucker replacement and is reported to take only 5 minutes to install, without harming your precious guitar in the process. At the press of a button, git-fiddlers can bring a touch of funky bottom to a solo picking performance, making it a good fit for dark metal gods with hands too small for a 7 or 8 string shred machine or sonic scientists on the lookout for a new six-string laboratory for wacky riff-offs with the band's bass player... RoomAlive transforms your living room into an interactive video game

RoomAlive is the latest prototype from Microsoft Research

Microsoft Research has moved on from IllumiRoom, its concept for adding visuals to the periphery of gamers' television sets. After concluding that that system -- which used a Kinect camera and a projector to bring video games into the living room -- was too expensive to be released commercially, the company has revealed RoomAlive, which is even more expensive and even less practical. Thankfully, it's also an intriguing glimpse at the possible future of gaming... Continue Reading RoomAlive transforms your living room into an interactive video game

Looking rather like a 10-meter (33 ft) tall sunflower, IBM's High Concentration PhotoVoltaic Thermal (HCPVT) system concentrates the sun’s radiation over 2,000 times on a single point and then transforms 80 percent of that into usable energy.
