Watch every SNES start screen ever made in this nine-hour video

Start screens may not serve much of a purpose, but over the years they've acted as a canvas for game developers to show off their hard work. And those start screens have a lasting impact: if you hammered away on a game when you were a kid, that start sequence probably has a special place somewhere in your heart. Some of the greatest such sequences come from the classic era of game consoles, and now you can check out all of the start screens from the SNES in one video — if you have nine hours to spare. YouTube user NicksplosionFX has uploaded a massive video that he claims features every single game released for the console (that's over 700 titles). And if you're looking for something from the 8-bit era, a second video released earlier...

Is your car infested with spiders? Mazda has a software update for that

Mazda has a spider problem, and now it's issuing a voluntary recall to implement a "bug fix" in every sense of the word. A certain species, known as the yellow sac spider, is spinning webs in the vent lines of Mazda 6 sedans. The spider is attracted to gasoline and other hydrocarbons, and despite the Japanese carmaker's best efforts, the arachnids keep finding their way inside of the vent lines. It's not just a problem because it's creepy, however. The spider webs can cause restricted air flow, which could lead to a pressure buildup in the fuel tank. Pressure can cause cracks, and cracks can lead to fires, though no fires have yet been tied to the issue.

The car company first noticed the problem a few years back, and it issued a recall...

New infrared sensor could make night vision contact lenses a reality

Night vision contact lenses may be the stuff of science fiction movies, but new research points the way to how we could some day see in the dark with our own eyes. Electrical Engineers at the University of Michigan have found a new way to sense infrared light using two layers of an atom-thick layer of carbon, known as graphene. Unlike prior methods, the substance doesn't have to be cooled to extremely low temperatures, and the device is very thin and small.

The researchers, Ted Norris and Zhaohui Zhong, faced a major hurdle with graphene: it just isn't very sensitive to light. "It’s a hundred to a thousand times lower than what a commercial device would require," said Zhong in a statement. So instead of relying directly on the...

Surprise success proves a struggle for indie game developers

Striking it rich with an indie video game hit may seem like a dream come true, but a quick look at lotteries and professional sports shows that a windfall can be difficult to handle. Perhaps unsurprisingly, game developers who've turned rich overnight have struggled to grapple with the sudden onslaught of attention, pressure, and — yes — even cash. Dong Nguyen, the maker of Flappy Bird , may be the most notable example (his simple game was pulling in some $50,000 a day before he pulled it from the App Store), but The New Yorker has interviewed a number of other developers about their struggles. The article includes discussions with the developers behind games like Ridiculous Fishing, Minecraft, and Braid to see how they've handled the...
