Microsoft unveils redesigned Office for Windows touchscreens

Using Office on a touch screen will get a whole lot easier soon. Microsoft has unveiled a new version of Office that gives each of its apps a mode built around use on a touchscreen — a feature that their predecessors quite noticeably lacked.

The new version, which Microsoft calls "a preview of a work in progress," looks quite a bit like the Office that was unveiled for the iPad just last week: apps have a simple bar on top, leaving most of the screen below for viewing documents. Most importantly, the toolbars are sparsely populated and feature buttons that should be large enough and spaced far enough apart that they'll be easy to select with your fingers. That said, the version Microsoft is showing on stage looks more full-featured...

Microsoft unveils universal Windows apps that can run on phones, tablets, and PCs

Microsoft is unveiling universal apps, a way for developers to create a single app that works across Windows phones, tablets, and PCs. "All of us want the same app experiences across all devices," David Treadwell, a Microsoft operating system executive said while introducing the new style of apps. "Yet today there’s no easy way to create apps that work across all form factors." That's changing on Windows, as Treadwell demonstrated on stage at Microsoft's Build conference while showing features supported in Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. Microsoft says this should be easy for developers to implement, as much of the code can be reused across the different platforms. "I don't have to buy a different app for the phone and the PC,"...

Amazon Fire TV hands-on: Prime comes to your living room

Amazon has just unveiled Fire TV, its first attempt at a set-top box for streaming movies, television shows, photos, games, and more straight to your TV. The Fire TV is all black and consists of a small, square box that connects to your televisions along with an even tinier remote. When turned on, the FireTV immediately displays a selection of new movies and TV shows in addition to various apps and games that you may want to dive into. Options to browse through specific categories appear on the lefthand side of the screen, but if you know what you're looking for, you can easily begin a search from any screen just by speaking into a microphone on the remote. Blocking Twitter violates free speech, says Turkish constitutional court

Turkey's highest court ruled today that the recent nationwide Twitter block is a violation of the free-speech protections written into the country's constitution. The ruling comes just a week after a lower court ordered the government to lift the virtual blockade, and shuts down any chance of appealing the earlier ruling. That's good news for Turkish activists and a powerful vote of legitimacy for Twitter itself, which had openly lobbied for lifting the block.

It's still unclear whether Prime Minister Ergodan will lift the ban to comply with the ruling, but they will have a 30-day window to do so, dating from the lower-court ruling on March 26th. In the meantime, citizens trying to access the service through the Turkish web have...

Amazon's tablets will be a companion for FireTV music listening and TV watching

Amazon just announced its new set-top box the FireTV, and along with it comes some impressive features. One of the more exciting is the device's second screen integration: FireTV supports Amazon's X-Ray feature for movies and television, and you can view that information on your tablet while you enjoy video on your TV. This includes information on programs and films pulled from IMDB, and the feature will even support music, so you can check out lyrics as a song is playing. It sounds like a similar tool to Microsoft's Smart Glass integration with the Xbox One. In addition to the second screen features, Amazon also revealed that the FireTV will double as a game console, complete with its own controller and a library of thousands of titles...

Amazon's FireTV set top box is also a gaming console

Amazon's FireTV set-top box will also act as a home console. The FireTV is billed not as a competitor to the Xbox or PlayStation brands, but as a way for people who wouldn't otherwise buy a console to play games. The company promises "thousands" of games available to customers by next month. Amazon claims it's made the FireTV three times as powerful as its competitors from Roku, Google, and Apple, giving it a dedicated graphics processor and 2GB of RAM. This will also presumably give it a boost in gaming. The company has announced a custom controller that will sell separately for $39.99 and come with 1,000 Amazon coins to buy games. Some games, however, will also be playable with the default remote.

So far, one of the highlights of the...
