Nanoparticle coating could let aircraft engines last three times longer

The new coating protects airplane engine components from heat damage, while lasting longer...

The higher the temperature at which an aircraft engine is able to run, the more efficiently it uses fuel. In order to run at those high temperatures, the metal components of airplane engines are presently treated with heat-shielding coatings. Scientists at Sweden's University West, however, are developing a new such coating that is said to be far more effective than anything presently used – it could extend the service life of engines by 300 percent. .. If you’re going to do something like building a Porsche 911 that fits on the head of a pin, or make a microscopic medical pump, you need a microscopic engine. A team of researchers from the University of Twente in the Netherlands, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Germany’s University of Freiburg have developed a micro-engine that burns oxygen and hydrogen, but there’s a small problem; they’re not sure how the thing works. .. Watch this dancer cut through New York City crowds with acrobatic feats

Sometimes technology and art make a perfect pair. Brooklyn-based studio Wild Combination has managed just that with its euphoric (and haunting) music video for Pillar Point's single "Dreamin'." Director Jacob Krupnick solicited dancer Daisuke Omiya for the video, and his intense, aerobatic moves provide gripping counterpoint to the emotional path of the music. His impressive moves — brought to the fore by the slow-motion footage and his bright red coat — seem to combat gravity as much as the cold, oppressive homogeneity of New York.

To pull it all off, the team used a 5K-capable RED Epic digital cinema camera that allowed not only for the slow-motion, but also many of the striking shots throughout the video. The camera's stunning...

NSA's reported Huawei hack gives glimpse of agency's role in 'cyber Cold War'

The creator of 'Second Life' wants to look inside your brain with the Oculus Rift

The creator of Second Life is helping scientists explore your brain. Philip Rosedale has collabored with neuroscientists in California on a system that, as Fast.Company reports, offers a virtual reality tour of "a person’s brain reacting to stimuli in real time." It does this with the help of many tools, including MRI scans and EEG electrodes that record a subject's brain activity. But the magic lies with Oculus Rift, which allows someone else to get an up close (and live) peek at your brain.

Rosedale demonstrated the "glass brain" system at SXSW earlier this month with the help of his wife. Flashes of light helped pinpoint her brain activity (based on the EEG data) and Rosedale was able to journey through her brain while wearing a...
