Nikon Df review: a tale of two cameras

Deion Sanders, one of the NFL’s best and most flamboyant players ever, was fond of saying that you “gotta look good to play good.” From tucking two towels into his belt on the gridiron to cutting off his sleeves during his part-time baseball career, he exemplified the ostentatious sports superstar. That voracity for aesthetic excellence is now also being felt by camera enthusiasts. It’s no longer good enough to just shoot great pictures, you’ve got to shoot great pictures in style.

Experience pop culture in an astronaut's footsteps

Scott Listfield has been painting an astronaut across the world for over a decade. In 1999, the artist began the painting series as a way to explore the the peculiarities of the present day. He was inspired by the dreams of flying cars and living in space of the mid 1900s, and even as recent as 2001. We're not quite there yet, but our world in 2014 is a strange place that we often take for granted.

Listfield says that some of his most popular paintings are those that feature the astronaut...

The insanity of making six retro games in six months

Rusty Moyher spent so much of last year building retro games he "blew out" his hands. As part of the Retro Game Crunch challenge, Moyher joined up with fellow developers Shaun Inman and Matt Grimm to develop six 8-bit-style games over the course of six months, based on ideas from Kickstarter backers. It was an ambitious project with tight restrictions and a tough schedule, which led to some overexertion. "We didn't really limit the amount of hours we were putting into it," says Moyher, who developed repetitive strain injury issues while working on the half-dozen new games. After a few delays, the trio managed to complete the games at the end of last year, and this week the collection is available as a bundle to anyone who missed out on...

Revenge of the jocks: sports invades tech's Texas utopia

The typical South By Southwest attendee, according to the comedian Alex Blagg, is a "guy who wears cool stuff," and sports a "sweet mustache and glasses," "fancy blazers with tons of zippers and straps," and a "black backpack full of batteries." In other words: hipster meets geek.

Even as SXSW has expanded from music, to film, to the startup world, to the eco movement, the show has maintained a consistent theme. The world of SXSW attracts a young, creative, college-educated, liberal-leaning crowd whose interests often bleed over from indie flicks to web design or from music to music streaming apps. But this year, SXSW introduced a new track that seems a bit… out of place.

The Holocaust's legacy threatens one company's US rail projects

A major French railway company has come under renewed scrutiny in the US over its ties to the Holocaust, and billions of dollars are at stake. The state-owned Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) shipped thousands of Jews to death camps during the Second World War, when France was occupied by German Nazi troops. The company formally apologized in 2011, saying it acted under coercion from the Nazis, but Holocaust survivors in the US are demanding reparations, and lawmakers have sprung into action.

This month the Maryland state legislature will debate a bill that would block an SNCF subsidiary from winning a lucrative public transit project unless its parent company pays reparations to Holocaust survivors in the US. The...

Designing a timeless smartwatch

Why can't great smartwatches look like normal watches? Smartwatches, for the most part, can be divided into two categories: vague approximations of the future like the Pebble, Gear, and Gear Fit, or conventionally styled watches from companies like Citizen and Cookoo that offer far less functionality. While it's true the Pebble Steel is making inroads in the aesthetic department, its blocky construction and oversized buttons aren't likely to appeal to the masses.
