Microsoft will use pop-ups to warn Windows XP users to upgrade

Microsoft is planning to use pop-up warnings to entice Windows XP users to upgrade. The software maker is ending support of XP on April 8th, and will start distributing notices next week to machines running the 12-year-old operating system. Pop-up warnings will appear on March 8th following the monthly patch cycle of Windows Update, and the notification will include a link to Microsoft’s Windows XP end of support site. The pop-up will continue on the 8th of every month unless Windows XP users check the "don’t show this message again" option.

Microsoft is also releasing a free transfer tool later this week that’s designed to migrate data from an old PC to a new device running Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. The tool,...

This is Cortana, Microsoft’s answer to Siri

Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update will include Cortana, a personal digital assistant designed to rival Siri and Google Now. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans have revealed to The Verge how Cortana looks and operates, replacing the built-in Bing search functionality on Windows Phone 8.1. While the feature is named after the Halo game series, Cortana will take the form of a circular animated icon instead of a female character. Cortana will animate when it’s speaking or thinking, forming a personality not dissimilar to Apple’s Siri.

Fujitsu Labs develops prototype haptic sensory tablet

One of four tactile demos on Fujitsu's prototype haptic sensory tablet

Many smartphone or tablet users will already be familiar with receiving vibration feedback when typing on a virtual keyboard, but, though better than nothing, it's not particularly convincing. There have been attempts to make sensory feedback from touchscreens more realistic using electrostatic force, for example, or even creating the sensation of physical buttons by pushing liquid into prearranged tactile pixels, but Fujitsu is claiming to break new ground with its prototype haptic sensory tablet...

Game Over.

Kickstarter marks $1 billion in crowdfunding pledges

Kickstarter celebrates over $1 billion in pledges from 5.7 million people

In less than five years, Kickstarter has raised over $1 billion in pledges. The crowdfunding site announced the landmark figure today with a special page full of stats about campaigns and pledgers. Kickstarter's growth has been huge, with $500 million raised in the past year alone. Almost exactly two-thirds ($663 million) of the $1 billion total was raised by the US, with the second- and third-most active countries lagging far behind with $54 million (UK) and $44 million (Canada). Although the vast majority of backers come from a select few countries, Kickstarter is nonetheless global: since the site's launch, 5.7 million people from 224 countries have backed projects.
