Steam's family sharing feature now open to all users

Last September Valve launched a small beta for Steam's new family sharing feature, and today it's finally available for everyone. The service lets Steam users share their entire game library with friends and family on up to 10 authorized devices. If you see a friend or family member playing a game you want to check out, you can send them a message requesting authorization. Game saves and achievements will remain separate, however, and the service doesn't work for every one of Steam's games — titles that require a subscription fee or third-party key, for instance, aren't accessible through family sharing. Your account can also only be accessed by one user at a time, so any time you're sharing a game, you won't be able to access it...

The dangerous, beautiful life of a Lego minifig photographer

UK-based photographer Andrew Whyte specializes in dramatic light art and long exposures of the night sky, but some of his most striking work involves helping an inch-high fellow photographer get a good shot. For over a year, Whyte has been shooting what he calls the "Legography" series, starring a Lego minifig with a bulky black camera and a penchant for exploration. The minifig travels with Whyte, waiting to be posed scaling a fence, watching the sunrise, or playing tourist in London.

Tim Cook fights back against shareholders concerned with environmental initiatives

Apple has made strides towards being more a environmentally friendly company, and plans to eventually have its facilities completely powered by renewable energy — but those plans aren't sitting well with some shareholders. The National Center for Public Policy Research, an Apple shareholder, put forth a proposal requiring Apple to be more transparent about its dealings with organizations focused on sustainability. The group is concerned about "affiliations that may primarily advance social or environmental causes rather than promoting shareholder value."

While the proposal was rejected by shareholders, as The Mac Observer reports, during the Q&A portion of Apple's annual shareholders meeting, CEO Tim Cook was questioned by a member of...

Windows Phone 8.1 Start Screen backgrounds revealed in screenshots

Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update will include an option to set a background image on the Start Screen. While the software maker has been experimenting with methods to support this, The Verge understands Microsoft has settled on an option that will allow Windows Phone 8.1 users to skin existing tiles with an image. Screenshots demonstrating the feature have leaked today, showing how Live Tiles can now be transparent and skinned with an image. The Verge can confirm these are genuine screenshots.

While this is a new customization option that won’t be turned on by default, not every single app will allow its tile to be skinned when a background image is selected. Apps like Games, Office, and Xbox Music will not be...

'Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare' review: perfectly prunable

These days, big-budget shooting games like Call of Duty and Battlefield are designed to be objects of obsession. They feature incredibly tight feedback loops: nearly every time you kill a enemy or achieve an objective, you get points towards new weapons that kill more efficiently and spectacularly the next time around. In 2009, Plants vs. Zombies hit upon a similarly addictive formula for 2D puzzle games: each time you successfully fend off the waves of zombies trying to reach your house —...

Texas woman wins half-million dollar revenge porn lawsuit

A woman in Texas has won a rare, major legal victory in a revenge porn case. Local station ABC KTRK reports that a civil court has awarded the anonymous woman $500,000 after her former boyfriend of seven years posted photographs and videos from their relationship on YouTube and other sites as a way to harass her after their breakup. "He would update me on how many people had seen it, or downloaded it," she tells ABC. While the ex-boyfriend reportedly plans to appeal the suit, this civil case has been more successful than other revenge porn suits, which often fall into a legal gray area. A case in New York, which attempted to use laws against harassment and public display of offensive material, was thrown out last month.

Thousands of Twitch.tv viewers beat massively multiplayer 'Pokemon' game

After 16 days, the hive consciousness of Twitch Plays Pokemon has successfully beaten Pokemon Red. Early this morning, thousands of chat participants navigated through the final fight with Blue, a major milestone in a "social experiment" that has effectively turned Twitch.tv into a huge crowdsourced gaming platform. Twitch Plays Pokemon, which launched on February 12th, translates chat text into button presses on a Game Boy emulator. The result was chaotic but surprisingly effective, and the number of players had risen to 35,000 within four days. Yesterday, players reached the endgame against the Elite Four— something the creator was initially dubious would happen. During the battle with Blue, viewership topped 100,000, though it...

Nokia X hacked to run Google’s Android apps and services

Nokia unveiled its X Android phones less than a week ago, with plans to use the handset to promote Microsoft services and not Google’s. After just a few days, hackers have managed to gain root access to the Nokia X and covert it to run most of Google’s key services. xda-developers member Kashamalaga managed to convert his Nokia X to run the Google Play Store and Google apps in five simple steps, suggesting Nokia hasn’t locked down the device too heavily. Apps like Gmail, Google Now, Google Maps, and Hangouts appear to run on his Nokia X developer handset.

While it’s not surprising that the Nokia X has been hacked to run Google apps and additional launchers, it’s still slightly embarrassing for the Finnish smartphone maker....
