Gif.Me Is A Chrome Extension For Gif Storage… Because GIFS!

ng2CT1

Gif.me is a new Chrome extension that allows users to store and share gifs they find on the internet with nothing more than a right click.

It’s wonderful.

The extension lets you right click on any gif, on any website, and choose the GIF ME option. From there, each gif is saved in a folder right in the browser window, with the option to view that gif or auto-copy the link to your clipboard. You can even tag various gifs to add a little organization to your Gif.me library.

Gif storage and organization isn’t something we all think about regularly, but I firmly believe that it should be.

Maybe you simply search for the right gif (with Giphy, potentially) at the moment you need it, or perhaps you bookmark your favorites as your trek along through the web. Maybe you even go so far as to save these gifs in a file on your computer.

Hell, you could even be a weirdo like me and save your favorite gifs in a macro application with shortcuts, so you can lay one out at the drop of the hat.

Long story short, if the above sounds like you (or you care about saving/sharing gifs at all) you should probably check out this Gif.me chrome extension. It essentially takes the same workflow as copying a gif (with the right click) but gives you the automatic option to save it as you do.

Plus, the gif URL stays exactly the same, giving credit where credit is due.

If you want to check out Gif.me, head on over here.

Mobile Rewards Startup Kiip Announces Strategic Investment From American Express Ventures

kiip logo

Kiip, a startup that allows brands to connect with consumers through mobile rewards and contests, says it has received a strategic investment from American Express Ventures.

The company raised an $11 million Series B last year and announced in January that ad holding company Interpublic Group (IPG) was part of the round. Given Kiip’s pitch for mobile rewards as a new kind of advertising, the IPG investment seemed natural.

As a strategic backer, American Express isn’t quite as obvious, but I could imagine Kiip expanding its commerce features over time. (The fund was launched specifically to back digital commerce companies.)

In his blog post about the deal, Kiip co-founder and CEO Brian Wong writes, “As Kiip expands into more verticals, becoming even more integrated into peoples’ lives beyond gaming, we have evolved beyond media and advertising into a company that builds value into every moment.”

I asked him about the size of the funding, but he declined to comment. He did offer a few more thoughts in the post:

With Kiip approaching its 3rd anniversary, and celebrating a series of wins, we are excited to announce our latest: an investment from American Express Ventures. They’ll be a part of our incredible roster of strategic investors and I am confident that our ecosystem will become even stronger as a result.

One of those recent wins? The fact that Kiip will power the rewards in Yahoo Japan’s mobile apps.

Stripe Now Open For Business In UK, Other Countries And Currencies Coming Soon

Stripe

Card payment processor Stripe is now available in its first European country, the U.K. British businesses can now add card processing to their websites and accept payments in GBP, EUR and USD. After expanding its service to Canada last year, more international locations should come soon.

Stripe isn’t partnering with any local player in the payment processing space and will have to compete with established companies, such as WorldPay or SecureTrading.

“There was a significant amount of work required to build the right relationships on the banking side and make the product work as seamlessly in the U.K. as it does in the U.S.,” Stripe U.K. director Andy Young told me. “We could have rushed out a hacky solution by partnering with existing payments companies in the U.K., but the downside is that this ends up with a much lower-quality product,” he continued. Stripe now has an office in London with four employees and is looking to double or triple this number by the end of the year.

Pricing in the U.K. is 2.4% + £0.20/€0.24/$0.30 per transaction + VAT. It is slighly cheaper than the U.S. pricing (2.9% + $0.30). European businesses will have to collect VAT on every transaction just like they would do using other payment processors. For now, only U.K. users can start charging in USD, GBP and EUR.

“For example, an ecommerce store in London can show prices in GBP for customers in the UK, EUR for customers in France, and USD for customers in the US,” Young said. It remains to be confirmed whether existing U.S. customers will soon be able to take advantage of this feature as well.

Accepting payments in other currencies was one of the most requested features. Most European banks charge a steep fee when you pay with your card in dollars. It hurt the bottom line for online shops who sell digital goods. “In the future we’ll be expanding with more currencies for users worldwide,” Young said.

Long-time partners Shopify, Bigcommerce, Squarespace, BigCartel and Wave updated their Stripe features for the new U.K. version of Stripe. For example, British users can now set up an online shop in Shopify or Squarespace from the U.K. and accept payments in GBP, EUR or USD. In addition to its existing partners, the company partnered with Kashflow and FreeAgent.

International expansions are a big part of Stripe’s current strategy. Yet, it’s a long and complicated process. “A substantial proportion of the work required to build Stripe in the

U.S. has been repeated for the U.K.,” Young said. Financial regulatory systems are very different around the world and Stripe wants to provide the same product everywhere — the company needs to accept all the various payment methods, provide the same fee structure and stay competitive with local players.

When asked when Stripe users should expect other international expansions, Young was surprisingly transparent about the company’s plans. “We’re working on quickly expanding to other countries within Europe and Australia, but we don’t have a timeline on our launches there just yet”, he said. “We’re already available in beta in Ireland, France and the Netherlands.”

5 Million Downloads And 1 Billion Games Later, Dots Drops On Android And Kindle Fire

dotsicon

Dots is to the smartphone what Snake was to Nokia feature phones 10 years ago. The game is simple, addictive, and as of today, available on Android.

The betaworks-backed mobile game has made quite the splash in the past three and a half months, raking up over 5 million downloads and almost 1 billion games played since launch. The Dots game even climbed to the top of the App Store charts in over 15 countries.

According to Paul Murphy, SVP of product at betaworks and Dots co-founder, the team spent more time building this Android version so that, with future updates, both the iOS and Android versions could be on the same pace. Dots will be available to Android users as well as Kindle Fire users.

And if that weren’t enough, there’s a new game mode available within the app that takes the second clock out of the equation. Rather than fight for the highest possible score achievable in 60 seconds, “Moves” has no time limit and instead offers 30 moves. The idea is to make the best moves for the highest score, without worrying about rushing.

Sounds like a great way to practice for multiplayer Dots, which was made available in a recent iOS update. Dots also hopped on the iPad not too long ago, so it’s good news that Android fans are going to be able to get in on the action.

Past that, Dots has brought 10 new languages to the platform including German, Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic.

The Dots team, which has grown a bit with the addition of some new game developers, are keeping their heads down and focusing on new game modes. They have set up a satellite office in the Maldives, and as Murphy vaguely notes, they’ve made “billions of dollars” so far.

[Disclosure: AOL Ventures invested in betaworks, the company that made Dots. AOL Ventures is owned by AOL, who also owns TechCrunch.]

Hala, a navegar y no hacer cosas malas niños.

Blue Apron Cooks Up $5 Million Series B Led By Bessemer, Plans Expansion To West Coast

Screen Shot 2013-08-15 at 7.56.10 AM

Blue Apron, a service that delivers all the ingredients you need to cook a beautiful, healthy meal, has today closeda $5 million Series B round of funding led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation by First Round and others.

With the funding, Blue Apron plans to expand to the West Coast, offering service to ten new states such as California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, and various select markets in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.

According to the press release, the expansion will allow Blue Apron to offer service to 80 percent of the nation, which is pretty impressive considering the company was founded in New York just a year ago. And momentum has been great. The company now delivers over 100,000 meals per month.

I asked Matt Salzberg, CEO and co-founder, how he felt about up-and-coming competition from similar services. After all, Plated just launched out of TechStars in New York with a similar model, while HealthyOut (a service that offers healthy pre-planned restaurant delivery) launched in May on our Disrupt NY stage.

“As the market-leader, our biggest competition is the status quo: consumers who still get their food from grocery stores or as take-out,” said Salzberg. “Blue Apron is simply a better way to eat. The market is absolutely gigantic, and our focus is on continuing to deliver the best recipes, and freshest food at lower-than-grocery store prices.”

According to Salzberg, the company makes “a healthy margin” on each meal delivered, with the price sitting at $9.99 per person, per meal. He says this is possible because, in hiring, the team recruited a special group of “food sourcing experts” who combine choosing high quality foods and produce for customers with massive purchasing power. Remember, 100,000 meals per month.

We reviewed Blue Apron not that long ago, and found it to be an educational, fun, and convenient experience. However, while $9.99 may offer a healthy margin to Blue Apron, it’s almost impossible to use the service as a money-saver unless you eat dinner only or you eat out almost exclusively.

The new $5 million round is an addition to a $3 million Series A, bringing the company’s total funding to $8 million.

To learn more about Blue Apron, check out the company’s CrunchBase or website.
